Serving Stockport’s homeless since 1991
The Wellspring has been a cornerstone of support in Stockport since 1991, growing from its early beginnings into a vital service for people facing homelessness. Explore our history to find out more.

The Wellspring is Born

The story of The Wellspring began in 1991, inspired by the compassion and vision of Fr. Constance (Con) Botter, the Parish Priest of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Stockport.
Born in Indonesia in 1932, Fr. Botter endured unimaginable hardship during his youth, including hunger and deprivation while interned in a prisoner-of-war camp. After his release, he returned to Holland with his family, only to face the trauma of homelessness, unemployment, and poverty. These early experiences shaped his deep empathy and commitment to helping those in need.
The Wellspring Kitchen Founded

As a Parish Priest later in life, Fr. Botter turned his empathy into action by founding The Wellspring Kitchen. It was his response to the growing concern among parishioners for the unemployed and vulnerable in Stockport. This spirit of practical, active support and social awareness remains central to The Wellspring’s mission today.
