The Wellspring (Stockport) is looking for a highly motivated and professional individual to join a small team of paid staff as a project worker.

You would be responsible in engaging, assessing and providing support to homeless and disadvantaged people. As well as undertaking practical tasks within the project. To achieve this you will need to be able to organise your work load to meet priorities and deadlines and you would need to be aware of the diverse needs of our members.

You will be expected to be proactive and innovative, looking at the best way of ensuring our members receive the best possible service. You will need to be a good and effective communicator, as you will work with a variety of members from different backgrounds. You will also have to be calm, knowledgeable and efficient and have a proven track record of working in a customer facing environment.

Full time position working 37.5 hours per week.

Candidate must be flexible and able to work unsociable hours including weekends.

Salary pro rata is between 16K – 18K depending on skills and experience.

The Wellspring (Stockport)




The Wellspring (Stockport) is a charity working to support vulnerable and homeless people in Stockport. We work with partners to deliver our services and are responsible to all our funders.


The Wellspring (Stockport) services which includes the daily serving of meals as well as referrals for housing, debt counselling, drug and alcohol services and education is delivered through a small team of paid staff, volunteers and a board of directors.


Main Purpose of The Job


To be involved with the management of the centre, to support and manage day to day operations and to support and motivate individual clients (known as members) to develop and improve their personal circumstances.


Centre Management Responsibilities

    1. Opening and closing the building
    2. Ensure the Security of the volunteers, staff, the centre and the centre users.
    3. Purchase of supplies and help ensure that equipment is maintained.
    4. To ensure the centre building cleaning regime is carried out.
    5. To ensure health and safety and hygiene standards are adhered to.
    6. Ensure that the centre is run in accordance with policies and guidelines.
  • Ensure The Wellspring (Stockport) rules are adhered to at all times 


  1. Members
  1. Registration of new members
  2. Assess needs of new and existing members
  3. Develop individual support and action plans
  4. Carryout appropriate referrals to statutory and voluntary agencies and work with our partners as part of the individual action plans
  5. Monitor, review and update individual plans
  6. Record and update systems
  7. Seek every opportunity to engage with individual members
  8. Act as advocate for members




    1. To take part in recruiting, inducting and training volunteers.
    2. To support volunteers facilitate and lead meetings as well as individual support as required.
  • To supervise the work of the volunteers ensuring they meet health and safety standards.


    1. Answer general enquiries and pass on information to appropriate people.
  • Assist with organising annual events such as the harvest when the bulk of our food is donated from churches and schools.




  1. Maintain a high standard of customer care to all those coming into the building
  2. Ensure all donations received are recorded in line with procedures.
  3. Ensure the reception counter is kept well organised and a friendly, welcoming atmosphere maintained.


Reports To:                The Project Coordinator


Location:                    Your work location will be at The Wellspring (Stockport) centre building as well as the occasional promotional and possible fund raising event.




Key Tasks

Centre Building

Ensure the building is managed efficiently on a daily basis.



To manage, co-ordinate and monitor individual support plans that will provide opportunity for members to improve and develop their lives.



Support and keep volunteers informed and maintain effective working relationships



To develop effective support to individual members and groups that will lead to improvement to their individual lives.


Be committed to continuous improvements to The Wellspring (Stockport) to benefit the overall services to the vulnerable and homeless people who we serve.


To ensure that all The Wellspring (Stockport) regulations, equal opportunities, and other relevant policies, code of conduct and personnel practices and procedures or other rules, policies and standards are complied with consistently at all times


The post holder needs to be flexible and carry out additional duties commensurate to this level of post.


Additional Information

  • The post holder will be required to work on a shift basis to ensure the Wellspring is open 365 days per year.
  • To attend monthly supervision and support sessions
  • To attend other meetings as requested by the Project Co-ordinator and The Wellspring (Stockport).
  • To actively participate in any training.
  • The successful candidate will require a satisfactory Criminal Record Bureau check.
  • The successful applicant will be required to complete a satisfactory 6 month probation period.
