History of The Wellspring

In 1990 St Chads Deanery ( 11 Roman Catholic Churches ) met together for a retreat / mission day led by Fr Botter. The Question asked was " If you were a missionary coming to Stockport, what would you like to see there, or what would you set up ? " After discussion the group decided that the unemployed and needy of the area needed a place to eat. One person came on the opening day. Slow to start but in one year help was needed from other churches to run the kitchen in the old sea cadet hut in Fletcher Street Stockport
Since its modest beginning in 1990 , The Wellspring has been serving homeless and disadvantaged men and women in Stockport, 365 days a year.
Today in 2009 The Wellspring has over 2500 members hopefully they all won't come and visit on the same day ! The Wellspring has evolved from a basic soup kitchen to a place where many services are available. From housing to health issues, educational courses, art groups , health walks and much more

The Wellspring staff have now supported over 350 people into housing. All of these people were sleeping rough in Stockport or Manchester at some time.

The Wellspring will soon be moving to a brand new building in the centre of Stockport, this new building will bring with it many new services to Homeless and Disadvantaged people. The new building will have a dedicated training room and a outside training area where we will be running several new courses including brick work and other out side skills. On the 11th of October 2009 The Wellspring finally moved into a brand new purpose built resourse centre on Harvey st in Stockport town centre. The new building is a huge leap foward for The Wellspring, The new building has much more room and a more welcoming feel about it. A dedicated training room and 2 additional surgery spaces are included as well as a large open plan staff area and a top of the range kitchen. The Wellspring looks forward to providing more support and better services to anyone who feels that we can help them.
