21 Feb 2005 - "Going homeless for the homeless" Epic Sponcered Bike ride in aid of The Wellspring
Going Homeless for the Homeless Tandem challenge
On March 18th Peter McDonald and Brian Anthony will be embarking on their greatest challenge so far as they try to accomplish a round UK tandem cycle ride in just 7 days. As well as supporting the Wellspring center with their sponsored ride, Brian and Peter will also be sleeping rough to further draw attention and experience for themselves the plight of the homeless in our own communities.
With increased property prices, social pressures, changes to benefit systems and many other reasons, the Wellspring has recorded a massive increase in the numbers of visitors over the last 12 months. Through the support of over 140 volunteers and a project team, the Wellspring manages to offer all its visitors a range of services as well as a nutritious hot meal, The prime aim of the Wellspring is to encourage those visitors in their journey from dependence to independence at the same time as providing companionship and a welcoming center for providing help.
The Wellspring Center itself is resident in a dilapidated building in an area off Fletcher Street in Stockport targeted for redevelopment. Consequently the Wellspring requires help to find a new building where its project and support for the homeless can continue, and raise the necessary funds to allow this relocation.
For over 13 years Stockport residents, local businesses and a number of our schools have generously supported the Wellspring with donations, food and practical help, which all goes towards allowing the day to day operations of the Wellspring to continue.
In addition to this, charity events and other sponsored challenges over the last 4 years have aimed to raise building funds to allow the much needed relocation become a reality, where the Wellspring can further expand its services and cope with the increasing demands.
Brian and peter have already raised over £5000 on previous coast to coast tandem rides in the last few years, but this journey is their furthest yet. Brian is registered blind and both are taking time off work to attempt the 7 day journey. They are aiming to raise £2000 and are paying their own expenses to ensure all donations go directly to the building fund.
Can you please consider pledging your support and help Brian and Peter to accomplish their challenge?
On March 18th they will depart for Holyhead in Wales, taking a ferry to Southern Ireland. From there they will cycle via Dublin to Westport on the West coast, and then continue on to Donegal. From there they will begin the return route across Northern Ireland eventually taking a ferry from Belfast to Stranrar in Scotland, and then their final journey will be a cycle journey down to England to Carlisle and their final leg home to Stockport.
